Important Survey Information:
Due to the Papal Mass on Thursday, April 17 at the Washington Nationals Park, and the proximity of that visit to the already scheduled Junior Retreat, DeMatha has decided to move the Retreat Day from Tuesday, April 22 to Thursday, April 17 and to give the junior class first choice on what they would like to do.
Every junior must attend either the Papal Mass or the Junior Retreat --- both experiences will fulfill the retreat requirement and the time commitment will be the same.
Tuesday, April 22, will now be a regular school day for all classes.
A Papal visit and mass is rare --- the last one was 30 years ago, and this will most likely be the only visit by Pope Benedict XVI. Depending on the percentage of juniors that desire to go to the Papal Mass, DeMatha may decide to take the entire junior class. Once DeMatha has a gage on the junior class, if there are tickets still available, they will be distributed to seniors, sophomores and then freshmen based on availability.
Tickets are only available for DeMatha students and faculty; DeMatha is not allowed to distribute them to anyone else by order of the Archdiocese. Please do not call the school to request any tickets.

Midtern Examination ESSAY Items
Each student is required to answer two (2) of the following items.
The answer to each of your the essay items MUST BE
typed
turned in to the teacher no later than Tuesday, December 18th, 2007, by 8:30 AM when the midterm examination begins.
Essay Items from which you may choose:
ICE, p. 60
A. Explain what Immanuel Kant means when he states that a good will is the only thing that can be regarded as “good without qualification”? Why does he maintain this position?
B. Given what you have learned about the ethical theories of Aristotle and Kant, as well as what you know about Christianity, which of these ways of thinking about right and wrong do you find is the most in keeping with your own way of thinking? Are you an Aristotelian, a Kantian, or a Christian? Give reasons for your answer.
ICE, p. 86
C. Imagine that you are behind John Rawls' "veil of ignorance" and did not know your own race, sex, class, or natural strengths, weaknesses, or proclivities. What principles would you adopt if you wanted to found an ideal society?
D. Should the United States have "duty-to-rescue" laws, i.e., laws that would require people to provide some minimum level of assistance to strangers who are injured or in danger? Why or why not?
E. Are there any differences between respecting the rights of your neighbor and following the Golden Rule, as advocated by Jesus? Use an example to illustrate your answer.
ICE, p. 99
F. The Catholic Church recognizes that it is possible for non-religious people to achieve a certain level of virtue. Why isn't this recognition a problem for or threat to Catholicism? Explain.
G. Explain in your own words what the point of the author's "caterpillar analogy" is. How does it illustrate the difference between natural and theological virtue?
H. What exactly does the Church mean by "charity"? How is it possible that our love for God could result in a love for our neighbor? Explain.
I. In this chapter, it was shown how faith, hope, and charity can influence and even perfect natural virtues; the examples of temperance, courage, and helping one's neighbor were used. Explain, using an example of your own, another way in which the theological virtues could perfect a different natural virtue.
J. Do you think that there might be a case in which one's obedience to the theological virtues --- i.e., obedience to God --- might require a person to do something that would not make any sense to Aristotle or someone who only recognized the natural, earthly virtues? Why or why not? Explain.
ICE, p. 120
K. Does belief in God and SnChrist make any difference to the way that humans make ethical decisions? Why or why not? Explain carefully and at length, using examples from the lives presented in this text or by your instructor.
ICE, p. 130
L. How did Newton's genius in physics contribute to the development of the philosophy of determinism?
M. What is the difference between “operant conditioning” and “classical conditioning”?
N. A “practical refutation” of determinism depends in some measure upon the concreteness of the examples given to show that all humans must live their lives as if they were free. Mention three concrete examples to show that, despite their protestations to the contrary, behaviorist and determinist philosophers live their lives believing that they are free.
